When I lived in Berlin, I used to often go for walks, through a car park near a dance studio. One particular day, while on one of these walks, I saw a mobile sauna in the middle of the car park. There was a window, through which I could see the backs of many young men and women enjoying the sauna together. To my horror, some even came out of it naked. being squeezed between the paper. Forms vary according to the density and quantity of paint. As soon as you fold the paper in half, the formless paint creates a perfect symmetrical form with the help of coincidence. I kept on experimenting to see to what extent I could develop such a simple technique. To these new accidental forms, I gave characteristics, narratives, situations and developed these simple forms into complex patterns. Through this, I aimed to give a new meaning to traditional values of Korean culture. I think the notion of ‚mask’ has an important meaning in society. As the renowned Swiss psychiatrist, Gustav Carl Jung stated, everyone has a social face or persona, one presents to the world—, a kind of mask, designed on the one hand to make a definite impression upon others, and on the other to conceal the true nature of the individual.’ Therefore a change of mask means a change of identity. I discovered a Korean poem written 1000 years ago, about a transformation of a fox and a raccoon. I used this poem as the narrative text of my booklet. To start with, I analysed different traditional masks by tracing them and then created a selection of 7 male and 7 female masks. Through various ways of folding the booklet, one can use different combinations of masks to create more faces. As what I see of you is only one layer of your many masks. I expanded on the topic of ‚mask’ by creating a comic book on the topic, as the concept still fascinated me. For this project, I wrote the text myself, on characters I encounter and observe in my daily life. I gave each of these characters a suitable mask.
